Two different approaches

Discord and Instagram solve text styling in different ways. Discord reads simple markers around your text and turns them into formatting when the message is sent. Instagram, as far as we can tell, has no markers for styling text in a bio or caption, so people who want a styled look paste Unicode characters instead. Knowing which approach a platform supports saves you from using the more fragile option when a built-in one exists.

Discord’s built-in markdown

Discord’s help article on markdown lists the syntax you can type into a message. It is real formatting, so the underlying letters stay normal.

  • Italics: *italics* or _italics_.
  • Bold: **bold**.
  • Underline: __underline__.
  • Strikethrough: ~~strikethrough~~.
  • Headers: one to three # characters at the start of a line, followed by a space.
  • Subtext: -# at the start of a line, followed by a space.
  • Spoilers: || around your text, which the article says does not work inside a code block.
  • Code: single backticks for inline code and triple backticks for a multi-line block.
  • Also documented: masked links, lists and block quotes.

Instagram and Unicode styles

We could not find official Instagram help text describing bold, italic or other text styling for bios and captions, so we make no claims about what Instagram supports or limits. In practice, people paste styled Unicode characters, such as the ones this site creates, into those fields. Treat the results as something to test: apps may display a style as empty boxes on some devices, and the bio length limit may count characters differently than you expect. Check the current rules in the Instagram app and Help Center before you rely on a specific limit.

Because Unicode styles are different characters, they may not match a search for the plain word. Keep your username, key words and links in normal text. For Instagram, that usually means using a styled name or a decorative line as an accent, with plain text carrying the details.

Which should you use?

On Discord, prefer markdown whenever it can do the job. It is quicker to type, keeps your message searchable and is more predictable for screen readers. Unicode styles can still be useful for a decorative nickname or a server name where markdown does not apply, but test it and keep the plain version available for anyone who needs it. On Instagram, Unicode is a workaround rather than a feature, so use it lightly.

  • Use Discord markdown for emphasis in messages, headers for structure and code formatting for snippets.
  • Use Unicode styles for short decorative bits in places with no formatting controls.
  • Do not combine the two on the same words. Markers around styled characters may not format as you expect.
  • Keep names, links and important information in plain text on both platforms.

Caveats

Platforms change. Markdown support may differ by client or server setting, and Discord says a code block negates spoiler tags. If something does not render, check the current help article. For Unicode styles, the fallback is the same everywhere: if the receiving device cannot draw a character, it shows a placeholder. Read our guides on where fancy text breaks and on accessibility before you use styled text for anything that matters.
